The Overseas Development Agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland

Trócaire is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Founded in 1973 by the Irish Bishops, Trócaire works on behalf of the Church to support some of the world’s most vulnerable communities, helping people to lift themselves out of poverty and to live with dignity and hope.

The Diocese of Limerick proudly supports and promotes the work of Trócaire across our parishes, schools and communities.

    What Does Trócaire Do?

Trócaire works in partnership with local organisations in countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Its work focuses on:

    • Tackling poverty and injustice
    • Supporting communities affected by conflict and crisis
    • Promoting human rights and gender equality
    • Addressing climate change and environmental challenges
    • Responding to humanitarian emergencies

Rather than providing short-term solutions alone, Trócaire works to empower communities to create lasting change.

    Trócaire & Lent

Many people are familiar with the Trócaire Lenten Campaign, which is a central part of parish and school life during Lent. Through prayer, awareness, and fundraising, we stand in solidarity with families facing hardship around the world.

Each year, Trócaire highlights the story of individuals and communities whose lives are being transformed through support from Ireland. Lenten boxes distributed in parishes and schools across the Diocese help make this life-changing work possible.

    Living Our Faith in Action

Supporting Trócaire is one way we live out the Gospel call to love our neighbour and care for creation. It reflects the Church’s commitment to Catholic Social Teaching, especially the principles of:

    • The dignity of the human person
    • Solidarity
    • The common good
    • Care for our common home

Through prayer, advocacy and financial support, the Diocese of Limerick continues to stand with Trócaire in building a more just and compassionate world.

    Get Involved

Parishes, schools and individuals can support Trócaire by:

    • Taking part in the annual Lenten campaign
    • Organising fundraising events
    • Learning more about global justice issues
    • Praying for communities experiencing poverty and crisis
