World Mission Ireland
Supporting the Church’s Mission Worldwide
World Mission Ireland is the Irish branch of the Pontifical Mission Societies, the official missionary arm of the Catholic Church. Its mission is to support the Church in some of the poorest and most remote communities around the world — helping to share the Gospel and provide pastoral, educational and social support where it is needed most.
The Diocese of Limerick works in partnership with World Mission Ireland to promote missionary awareness and solidarity within our parishes, schools and faith communities.
What Does World Mission Ireland Do?
World Mission Ireland raises funds and awareness to support:
- Mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania
- The training of seminarians and religious
- The building of churches, chapels and pastoral centres
- Healthcare and education initiatives in mission territories
- Communities facing poverty, conflict and hardship
Support given through World Mission Ireland goes directly to local bishops and Church leaders in mission dioceses, enabling them to respond to the needs of their people.
Mission Sunday
A key moment in the Church’s missionary calendar is Mission Sunday, celebrated worldwide each October. On this day, Catholics across the globe come together in prayer and solidarity with mission communities.
Parishes in the Diocese of Limerick participate in Mission Sunday by:
- Celebrating the universal mission of the Church
- Sharing stories from mission territories
- Taking up the annual Mission Sunday collection
- Encouraging prayer for missionaries and the communities they serve
Mission Sunday reminds us that every baptised person is called to be a missionary disciple, sharing faith through prayer, generosity and witness.
Living the Mission
World Mission Ireland helps us to recognise that the Church is truly global. The faith we celebrate in Limerick is shared by communities in every corner of the world, often in places where resources are limited and challenges are great.
By supporting World Mission Ireland, we express our solidarity with the universal Church and answer Christ’s call:
