World Youth Day
Limerick Diocese – Journeying with Young People for Over 30 Years
The Diocese of Limerick has proudly participated in World Youth Day for more than 30 years, accompanying young people from our parishes as they gather with millions of others from across the globe to celebrate their faith.
What is World Youth Day?
World Youth Day (WYD) is an international gathering of young Catholics from around the world, initiated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1985. It is celebrated every two to three years in a different country and brings together young people (typically aged 16–35) for:
- Prayer and celebration of the Eucharist
- Catechesis and faith formation
- Cultural exchange and friendship
- Encounters with the Pope
- A joyful witness to the universal Church
World Youth Day is more than a festival, it is a pilgrimage of faith. Young people experience the global Church in a powerful way, deepening their relationship with Christ while forming lasting friendships with fellow pilgrims.
Limerick Diocese & WYD
For over three decades, young people from the Diocese of Limerick have travelled to World Youth Days across Europe and beyond. Generations of pilgrims have returned home strengthened in faith, enriched by international friendships, and inspired to serve in their parishes and communities.
Our diocesan groups typically prepare together in advance through:
- Faith formation gatherings
- Fundraising initiatives
- Community-building events
- Pilgrimage preparation meetings
These experiences help foster leadership, confidence and a deeper sense of belonging within the Church.
Where is the Next World Youth Day?
The next international World Youth Day will take place in Seoul in 2027, announced by Pope Francis at the conclusion of WYD Lisbon 2023.
This will be the first World Youth Day held in South Korea and promises to be a historic and inspiring gathering for young Catholics worldwide.
Interested in Joining?
The Diocese of Limerick hopes to continue its long tradition of participation in World Youth Day. Further details regarding diocesan involvement, registration, and preparation gatherings for WYD 2027 will be shared in due course.
If you are a young person interested in attending, or a parent seeking more information, please contact the Diocesan Office or keep an eye on this page for updates.
