Limerick Diocese World Day of the Poor Forum
To mark the upcoming World Day of the Poor on 15th November 2026, Bishop Brendan Leahy invited Social Agencies working throughout Limerick City and County to come together at the Diocesan Centre.
In his opening remarks to the forum Bishop Leahy stated; “It is shocking to think, that one in three residents in Limerick City live in an area classified as disadvantaged, and four of Ireland’s five most deprived electoral divisions are in Limerick City including Ireland’s only two extremely disadvantaged areas.”
The keynote speaker at this inaugural forum was Mr Jim Clarken, CEO of Oxfam Ireland, a proud Askeaton man. In reference to Limerick he said; “You are a postcode away from being poor/rich, which sounds extraordinarily challenging to get your mind around; and the level of deprivation that can happen in an extraordinary wealthy society.” He cautioned those gathered to be careful of material created online which shores up separation and division and said; “the vast majority of humanity believes in decency and believes in fairness….. fairness, as a real social justice message.”
The Discussion panel included representatives from Adapt House, St. Vincent de Paul, Limerick Social Service and Doras. Over 45 participants attended the forum from 35 local social agencies The day was organised and facilitated by Sr Mary Dolora RSM. Participants shared their stories of how they got involved in working for the poor and the challenges they face here in Limerick.
